Fire Engulfs Chez Gado Gado, a Popular Dining Spot in Bali’s Seminyak

BADUNG, Bali — A fire tore through Chez Gado Gado, a well-known restaurant in the resort area of Seminyak, on Sunday evening, startling tourists and residents as flames consumed the building during one of the busiest hours of the night.

The fire broke out at about 7:40 p.m. local time at the restaurant on Jalan Camplung Tanduk in Seminyak, a popular destination on Bali’s southern coast that draws large numbers of international visitors.

The restaurant was crowded when the blaze began, with foreign tourists making up a substantial share of the diners. Flames could be seen spreading through the building, prompting people in and around the restaurant to move away from the scene as firefighters rushed to the area.

Dewa Ngurah Bhayudewa, head of the Badung Fire and Rescue Service, said the first report was made by a security officer at the restaurant, I Gede Rai Parwita.

Firefighters were dispatched at about 7:42 p.m. and reached the scene eight minutes later. Ten fire engines were sent to fight the blaze, with crews arriving from the main station and fire posts in Kunti, Majapahit, Dalung and Mengwi.

The firefighting operation continued for about two hours and 40 minutes as crews worked to contain the flames in a building measuring roughly 45 by 40 meters.

"About 115,000 liters of water were used in the operation, Mr. Dewa said", according to local media reports.

Firefighters were assisted by PLN, Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, as well as the police, restaurant security personnel and residents who helped secure the area and support the emergency response.

No deaths or injuries were reported.

The fire, however, caused substantial damage to the restaurant. The cause of the blaze and the total value of the losses were not immediately known. (NB)
