Rough weather keeps Pengambengan fishermen ashore as lemuru catch vanishes

JEMBRANA, NETIZENBALI.COM - Fishermen in Pengambengan, Jembrana regency, have been struggling with rough weather in recent days as strong winds and high waves in the Bali Strait continue to limit fishing activities and reduce catches.

The unstable sea conditions have forced many fishermen to avoid venturing into deeper waters, with most choosing to remain near the coastline to minimize risks at sea.

The impact has been felt not only in daily fishing operations but also in declining fish supplies. Local fishermen say they have mainly been catching tongkol (skipjack tuna), while lemuru — a key commodity in Pengambengan’s fishing industry — has not appeared for nearly three months.

Muklis, a fisherman from the area, said the current conditions were far from ideal.

“The winds have been quite strong lately, so we cannot go too far offshore. We only catch tongkol now, while lemuru has not appeared for a long time,” he said on Friday.

According to Muklis, the decline in catches has been significant compared to normal conditions.

“When the weather is good, one boat can bring in up to 10 tons of fish. Now, getting even 1.5 tons is already difficult. Many fishermen are facing the same problem,” he said.

The situation has also affected activities at the Pengambengan Fish Auction Center (TPI), where trading activity has slowed due to the reduced supply of fish landed by fishermen.

As they wait for conditions to improve, some fishermen have used the downtime to repair boats, inspect fishing nets and maintain engines in preparation for returning to sea once the weather stabilizes.

Fishermen in the area hope calmer seas will soon return, allowing them to resume normal fishing activities and improve catches that have sharply declined in recent weeks. (NB/ wan)
