Giant Sperm Whale Washes Ashore in Melaya, Drawing Crowds to Bali Beach

JEMBRANA, NETIZENBALI.COM - A giant Sperm Whale was found stranded along Anyar Sari Beach in Nusa Sari village, Melaya district, Jembrana regency, on Tuesday afternoon, triggering shock and curiosity among local residents.

The rare incident occurred at around 2 p.m. local time, when villagers spotted what initially appeared to be a massive object moving offshore, roughly 100 meters from the coastline. As the tide receded, the marine mammal reportedly struggled to return to deeper waters before eventually becoming stranded on the beach.

The whale, estimated to measure around 15 meters in length, quickly drew hundreds of onlookers from nearby areas, turning the coastal site into a crowded spectacle.

“At first, people thought it was just a large object floating in the sea. But after watching closely, we realized it was a whale. It kept drifting closer until it finally washed ashore,” a local resident said at the scene.

Authorities and marine wildlife personnel later arrived to secure the area, assess the whale’s condition and manage the growing crowd. Residents were urged to keep a safe distance for safety reasons.

Preliminary identification conducted by wildlife medical personnel confirmed the whale was female. Officials said the exact cause of death has yet to be determined pending further examination.

Local authorities are continuing coordination efforts for the handling and disposal of the whale carcass. The stranding of a sperm whale in Melaya has drawn widespread attention, as such incidents are considered rare along the coastal waters of western Bali. (NB/ Wan)
