Indonesia Warns Meta Over Low Compliance in Tackling Online Gambling and Harmful Content

JAKARTA, NETIZENBALI.COM – Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid conducted a surprise inspection at the Jakarta operational office of Meta on Wednesday (March 4, 2026), issuing a stern warning over the company’s handling of harmful online content across its platforms.

The inspection was carried out in response to concerns over the inadequate moderation of illegal and harmful content on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, including online gambling, disinformation, defamation, and hate speech.

Government monitoring data shows that Meta’s compliance rate in responding to reports of online gambling and harmful content in Indonesia stands at only 28.47 percent, placing it among the lowest-performing social media platforms operating in the country.

The figure is particularly alarming given Indonesia’s massive user base on Meta platforms. Both Facebook and WhatsApp have around 112 million users each in Indonesia, making the country one of the largest markets for the company globally.

“Content containing disinformation, defamation, and hate speech has the potential to threaten public safety if not addressed quickly,” Meutya said in a statement, emphasizing the urgency for platforms to strengthen content moderation.

The Indonesian government warned that the spread of disinformation could fuel social division, weaken democratic processes, and increase social polarization that may threaten public order.

Authorities cited Article 40 of Indonesia’s Electronic Information and Transactions Law (ITE Law), which grants the government authority to prevent and address the distribution of unlawful digital content. The minister stressed that all digital platforms operating in Indonesia must comply with national regulations and take responsibility for maintaining a safe digital environment.

The government also urged Meta to improve its content moderation systems and accelerate responses to illegal content, including online gambling, health-related disinformation, digital fraud, and sexual exploitation cases that have increasingly surfaced on its platforms.

During the inspection, Meutya was accompanied by senior officials from several institutions, including the National Intelligence Agency of Indonesia, the National Cyber and Crypto Agency of Indonesia, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and the Indonesian National Police. (NB/ wan)
