DENPASAR, NETIZENBALI.COM – The Indonesian Cyber Media Union (SMSI) Bali Province will hold an environmental conservation activity by planting 1,000 mangrove seedlings at the Ngurah Rai Tahura Arboretum, a mangrove conservation and education center in Bali, on Monday, March 9, 2026.
The activity is part of the commemoration of National Press Day (HPN) 2026, which is observed annually on February 9. The program will involve the environmental community Jaringan Jurnalis Peduli Sampah (J2PS) Bali, as well as the Bali Provincial Forestry and Environment Agency (KLH).
Chairman of J2PS and head of the event committee, Agustinus Apollonaris KD, said the mangrove planting initiative was chosen in response to growing concerns about environmental degradation.
“Journalists are not only responsible for reporting environmental issues and damage, but also for taking part directly in conservation efforts through simple actions such as planting mangroves,” Agustinus said on Thursday, March 5, 2026, as quoted by Barometer Bali.
According to him, the mangrove forest in Tahura Ngurah Rai stretches across a vast coastal area and remains lush and strong. However, without continuous attention and monitoring, the ecosystem remains vulnerable to damage caused by natural factors and human negligence.
Agustinus, who also serves as Deputy Chairman for Organization, Cadreization and Membership (OKK) of SMSI Bali Province, added that the direct involvement of journalists is expected to strengthen their understanding of mangrove ecosystems and environmental issues.
A total of 1,000 mangrove seedlings for the event have been prepared by the Bali Provincial Environment and Forestry Agency through the UPT Tahura Ngurah Rai.
“The important thing is not just planting the mangroves but also taking care of them. Often people plant trees and then leave them without proper maintenance. We encourage fellow journalists from SMSI Bali Province to participate directly in this activity,” he said.
Several corporations, associations and banking institutions are supporting the environmental initiative, including Bank BPD Bali, Angkasa Pura Supports, Jasa Marga Bali Mandara, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport by InJourney Airports, Bhakti Rahayu Hospital, the Indonesian Waste Entrepreneurs Association, Bebek Bengil, ITDC, and Pelindo.
Agustinus emphasized that mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal ecosystems and supporting local livelihoods.
“Mangroves are a natural fortress that protects coastlines from abrasion while also serving as an ecosystem that supports fisheries and the livelihoods of coastal communities,” he said.
The environmental action is expected to involve hundreds of journalists from media organizations affiliated with SMSI Bali Province and J2PS Bali, along with government stakeholders and private sector partners. The event is scheduled to be officially opened by Bali Deputy Governor Nyoman Giri Prasta. (NB/ wan)
