DENPASAR, NETIZENBALI.COM - Once a familiar sight along the streets of Bali and many parts of Indonesia, the traditional horse-drawn carriage known as the dokar is now slowly disappearing, replaced by the roar of engines and the congestion of modern traffic.

For decades, the dokar served as an important mode of transportation, carrying passengers through towns, markets, and coastal roads. With its distinctive wooden carriage, decorated harnesses, and the rhythmic sound of horse hooves, the dokar symbolized a slower, more peaceful era of daily life.

Today, however, rapid urban development and the surge in motorized vehicles have pushed the dokar to the brink of extinction. Narrow roads filled with cars and motorcycles leave little space for horse-drawn carriages to operate safely and efficiently. Traffic congestion, pollution, and safety concerns have made it increasingly difficult for dokar drivers to continue their traditional livelihood.

“I used to have many passengers every day,” said one dokar driver. “Now, people prefer faster transportation like motorcycles or ride-hailing services. Sometimes, I wait for hours without a single passenger.”

Beyond its practical function, the dokar represents a valuable cultural heritage. It reflects the history, craftsmanship, and traditions of local communities. The colorful decorations and unique design of each carriage tell stories of regional identity and pride.

In some areas, dokar services survive mainly as tourist attractions, offering visitors a nostalgic experience of traveling through the streets in a traditional way. However, without active preservation efforts, the number of dokar continues to decline each year.

Cultural observers and local communities have expressed concern over the gradual disappearance of the dokar. They emphasize the importance of preserving traditional transportation not only as a historical artifact but also as a living symbol of cultural identity.

As cities continue to modernize, the dokar stands as a reminder of a simpler time — when journeys were slower, streets were quieter, and tradition moved at the gentle pace of a horse’s stride. (NB)
