Takjil Market Brings Ramadan Spirit to Loloan, Jembrana

JEMBRANA, NETIZENBALI.COM - As the sun begins to set over Loloan in Jembrana Regency, the streets of Katulampo transform into a lively takjil market, drawing residents eager to prepare for iftar during the holy month of Ramadan.

Every afternoon ahead of the Maghrib prayer, dozens of street vendors line the roadside under simple tents, offering a colorful variety of traditional snacks and sweet refreshments. The market has become a seasonal highlight, not only for local Muslims but also for visitors curious to experience the warm community atmosphere.

Among the popular items sold are kolak pisang (banana cooked in palm sugar and coconut milk), es buah (mixed fruit ice dessert), bubur sumsum (rice flour porridge with palm sugar syrup), assorted fried snacks, and traditional Balinese cakes. The aroma of freshly fried gorengan fills the air, blending with the sound of friendly bargaining and passing motorbikes.

“I come here every day before breaking my fast. It’s become a tradition for my family,” said Ahmad Fauzi, a local resident of Loloan. “The food is affordable, and the atmosphere feels very close and welcoming.”

Vendors say Ramadan provides an important economic boost. Many small traders rely on the takjil market to increase their income during the fasting month.

“Alhamdulillah, sales are good, especially on weekends,” said Nur Aini, a takjil seller who has been participating in the market for the past five years. “People usually start coming about an hour before Maghrib.”

As the call to prayer echoes from nearby mosques, buyers quickly complete their purchases and return home to break their fast with family. Within minutes, the once-crowded roadside begins to quiet down.

Beyond commerce, the takjil market reflects the strong communal ties in Loloan, an area known for its rich Islamic heritage within the predominantly Hindu island of Bali. The annual Ramadan tradition continues to strengthen social bonds while supporting small-scale entrepreneurs.

For many residents, the takjil market is more than just a place to buy food — it is a symbol of togetherness, gratitude, and the vibrant spirit of Ramadan in Jembrana. (NB)
